"As per our SBTi 2023 submission, Nespresso has committed to reach net zero emissions by 2025. Expected carbon reduction are coming from the transition to regenerative agriculture as part of our Green coffee supply chain, recycled aluminium in capsules, capsule recycling rate increase and switching boutiques to renewable energy.
- Green Coffee Supply: in 2023, a third party assessment conducted by Enveritas estimates that 85% of our AAA green coffee is sourced from farms with regenerative practices.
- Recycled Aluminium in Capsules: currently our home capsules contain 80% to 85% recycled aluminium.
- Capsule Recycling Program: At Nespresso we have the conviction that no resource should be thrown away. For that we implemented a dedicated to collect used aluminium capsules . The objective of the Nespresso Capsule Recycling Program is to provide an easy and effective recycling solution for consumers of Nespresso and Nestlé aluminium coffee capsules in Australia, while reducing coffee capsules lifecycle.
This program consists of the following steps:
- Consumers return their used coffee capsules to Nespresso in one of four ways: by dropping them off at a Nespresso Boutique, collecting capsules in bulk on behalf of their community and arranging a free collection, dropping them off for free at a participating public collection Point, or by posting them in a specially designed pre-paid Australia Post recycling satchel.
- Used capsules are transported from Nespresso collection points to a dedicated capsule processing facility.
- At the processing facility, the coffee grounds are separated from the aluminium. Coffee grounds are then sent to an industrial composting facility to be transformed into compost. Meanwhile the aluminium is baled and sent to the aluminium industry to produce new products.
- Paper and plastic packaging used for collecting capsules is also recycled. "
"At Nespresso, we make our capsules from aluminium as it protects the freshness and aromas of our coffee for a long time. It is a perfect barrier to oxygen, light, and humidity, and to protect the freshness and the aromas of high-quality coffee over time. What’s more, it is infinitely recyclable and is one of the most widely-recycled materials in the world.
All Nespresso Original capsules are made using 80% recyclable aluminium, and most Vertuo capsules are made using 85% recycled aluminium. "

These requirements are mandatory for Nestle vendors to ensure responsible and sustainable practices.
To ensure compliance, we verify alignment and adherence to these requirements through various means for our direct suppliers.
